Desert Dwellers

some of the ground squirrels have figured out how to climb up to get a drink in the bird bath...and yes, birds drink there, too, and even take "baths'...

Side Blotch Lizard clearly revealing how it got its name
(the dark blotch behind its front leg)

this is the Carolina Jasmine growing around the patio roof post, which recently has become the nightly roost for a road runner (!)

probably it thinks it is all hidden in there, but its tail sticks out

from this angle a bit of its speckled head is visible through the leaves, on the right side of the post, along with its tail on the left...I might never have noticed it if I had not been standing nearby watching (in astonishment) as it jumped up on the patio table and then jumped in there with its powerful legs a few nights ago at dusk...

  1. How the thrasher's beak mimics the Palo Verde thorns in reverse. Supreme delight of "hiding" roadrunner. I love the Curve paintings, and your palette. Thanks, Tina, for soul-breakfast as I begin a third week of studio commitment. This is the most beautiful desert blog. I trust you are having a great open-studio weekend. love from Constance
