when I first came to Joshua Tree and saw this bird that is nearly as large as a robin, I had no idea what it could be...my experience with wrens had been of very small birds...
and they sometimes do make their nests in cholla cactus

like this big one in front of my house...

...and when I first saw all this junk which looked like it had become caught in the cactus thorns I started to try to remove it...

and then I saw it was being used to make a soft nest...


their ubiquitous dry calling is, to me, a beloved part of this desert paradise...
you live in an amazingly beautiful place. thanks for writing about it and the cloud photos are stunning.
